Apple fans are all abuzz over the next generation of iPhones and the Apple Watch. That’s all good and fine, but we’re still gawking over the recently released drone video of the construction taking place on Apple’s new campus. (I recommend muting your speakers unless you enjoy listening incessant drone buzzing for 8+ minutes).

While this unauthorized video is one of the first glimpses into this massive project, Apple’s intentions to build a massive circular office building have been known for years. In 2006, Steve Jobs made it known that he intended for Apple to build a second campus, better suited to the company’s growing needs. Although construction was slated to start in 2013, a series of delays prevented anything from happening until this year, and construction is expected to take at least another 3-4 years. Estimated cost of the project is around $5 billion. Check out Apple’s official video on Campus 2 below.

The original vision of Apple Campus 2 was set forth by Steve Jobs to be the best office space in the world. When all is said and done, the new campus will accommodate 13,000 employees in the central ‘spaceship’ style building. The unique architecture ensures that 80% of the campus will be green space, and green construction practices will take advantage of the area’s comfortable climate to reduce the need for heating and air conditioning by about 75% less than a typical office space of that size. In addition, the campus will be run on 100% renewable energy. Not surprising from one of the world’s premier technology companies, the construction process is using the latest technologies, including a form of smart glass completely unique to this building, as well as a never before used form of concrete.

The construction of Apple’s new campus is intriguing to say the least. Coming from a company that tends to set trends in everything it does, we are anxious to see if Apple’s innovative building will have a wider impact on the construction industry.
