In this episode of BuilderChat, we sat down with Carl Leneis, Chief Estimator at Odyssey Global. Carl has been in the construction industry for more than 20 years, and for the last five, his primary focus has been on estimating. As a Chief Estimator, Carl’s tasks include all aspects of preconstruction such as takeoff, bid solicitation, bid evaluation, final pricing and customer proposals. Carl also gets involved in the management of business overhead expenses, as well.
As Carl described it, “Getting awarded a project is a double-edged sword. You have to understand that our industry success rate is only about ten percent; maybe even lower. You get used to the disappointment of not receiving a job, but it pays off when you do win.”
Having been in the industry for 20+ years, Carl shares valuable advice for others entering the field; “Make sure you get some field experience as an engineer. Your boots need to be dirty, day in and day out, for several years before you figure out how this all comes together.”
